Safety Speed Cut Panel Saw

The Safety Speed Cut C4 Vertical Panel Saw in ActionOver fifty years ago Gene Olson developed what would become the Safety Speed Cut panel saw (the company name is now Safety Speed Manufacturing) in his garage. He found a way to quickly cut down large panels without losing his entire garage to the saw. This grew to a huge business, with tens of thousands of machines sold and a world headquarters in Minnesota. The panel saw business was good, and to this day they still make them.

In early 2000, they expanded to belt sanders, and even edgebanders. You can even find a panel router to match your new saw. At the end of 2010, they changed their name to reflect their new product diversity, and also changed the logo to match.

Since they now make more than saws, they dropped the "cut" from the name, Brian Donahue, President of Safety Speed Manufacturing had this to say:

The new name Safety Speed Manufacturing is a shortened version of Safety Speed Cut Manufacturing Co. Inc. “The word “Cut” in our name no longer represents our full capacity; our current products can Cut, Rout, Sand, and Edge material.

All that know how not only sells panel saws, but also picks up some awards. In late 2009 the Safety Speed Cut C4 Vertical Panel Saw was rated as the best portable panel saw in the business by Tools Of The Trade magazine.

Safety Speed Manufacturing makes a variety of panel saws, including:

  • ES52 Panel Saw- which is built for high production applications, with a monster 7 horse motor.
  • C4 Panel Saw - The C4, and the C5 panel saw are designed to be mobile, both of which are built on a 5 foot frame. The C5 can handle stock over 5 feet wide.
  • H-Series Panel Saw - full sized mid level vertical panel saw, used for general panel processing.
  • 6400 Panel Saw - built with worm gear drives, the 6400 and 6800 panel saws are heavier duty and 1/64" accuracy.
  • 7400 Panel Saw - Another high production model, these rugged saws offer extra large options for panels bigger than 10 feet in length.
  • Panel Pro Vertical Panel Saw - The panel pro is for amateur wood workers and do yourselfers. At less than $1000 it's a modest investment as far as panel saws go, still backed by the Safety Speed brand.

The reviews for the Safety Speed Cut panel saws are mostly positive, however you will find the occasional complaint on things like blade binding due to sawdust build up. Just like the guide rods, regular cleaning will solve this problem and keep your saw, regardless of brand, humming along. It's also a good idea to go ahead and buy the wheel kit if your saw doesn't come with it- moving a panel saw can be challenge, especially if you are working alone.
