Powermatic Panel Saw

The roots for the modern Powermatic Panel Saw go back over ninety years. Leonard F Smith built a homemade planer in his farm workshop, in 1921. He used the machine with some success in his own timber business, and after a while the company's first customer offered to buy the machine.

As any smart businessman knows, you invest your early profits back into the business, and Smith built more planers, using his lumber industry contacts to drum up business. Orders were brisk and he knew he had a winner, so he moved into full time production of the machines.

The quality of the machines sold themselves, and in 1928 Smith officially named the company Powermatic, and moved manufacturing to a blacksmith shop in town. The business remained in the family, and continued to expand to larger and larger facitilities, eventually building its own foundry. After 50 years as a family business, Powermatic was sold to Houdaille industries, but still remained close to the local community. There were a couple more changes of ownership- today they are part of the WMH Tool Group. In addition to a variety of wood working machinery, Powermatic makes both a vertical and horizontal panel saws.

Their current horizontal panel saw, the HPS126 has a 7.5 horse motor, and can handle up to 10.5 foot stock. The body of the saw is heavy steel plate, full seam welded for strength and anodized to protect the stock. The rip fence supports two positions, and micro adjustments for fine cuts. Controls are sealed to prevent dust fouling- and there are two dust collection ports.

If you're looking to save some space, Powermatic's current vertical offering is model 511 panel saw. It features a 3 horse worm drive motor, and stainless steel rails. The unit can handle stock up to 5 feet tall, and there's a counterweight system to keep the cuts smooth, effortless and balanced. Dust collection was included in the design, and the Powermatic 511 can pull dust from both the face and the back of the stock. As in the beginning the company, Powermatic panel saws are known for their quality. The solid cast iron manufacturing makes for steady, accurate cuts.
